Unitron has spent 50 years changing the way people overcome hearing challenges. More recently they pioneered AntiShock technology, which helps control and reduce sudden impulse noises, without interfering with speech and background sounds.
Starkey has specialized in hearing aids, ear molds, and custom hearing products since 1967. They are one of the first companies to create in-ear and in-the-canal ear mold hearing aids.
Siemens has been developing new technological solutions for hearing loss since 1878, including invisible, waterproof, and rechargeable hearing aids, as well as wireless solutions that synch with mobile phones, TVs, MP3 players, and more.

Style and Fit
Style , Fit, and Comfort
Ears come in every shape and size, and so do hearing aids.
Finding the right fit for you is easier than ever. Hearing aids come in a variety of styles and fits. Different designs provide different hearing solutions, as well as a range of models to suit individual ears. Whatever your particular hearing condition, budget, and needs, there is a hearing aid that is perfect for you. We at Chattanooga Healthy Hearing are ready to help you find your personal fit.
Behind The Ear
These hearing aids are secured over and behind the exterior part of your ear. These are fitted with a custom ear mold made just for you. They are some of the most durable, but can also be some of the most visible. They work well for a wide range of hearing needs.
These are similar to the Behind the Ear devices but do not require a custom fit. There is an outside piece that fits over and behind the ear, but rather than the larger component that fits into the ear, there is a small tube that extends into the ear. They are less visible than Behind the Ear devices, but the smaller components can be more difficult to maintain and insert.
In The Ear
These custom-fit hearing aids rest inside the ear, filling the visible area around the entrance to your ear canal in a single package. Because they are a custom fit and sit so closely in the ear, they can be a great choice for those with a wide range of hearing issues, even severe cases. As with other in-ear types, these take a little more maintenance than exterior style hearing aids to keep clean, free of wax and moisture. However, modern designs are still very durable and simple to use.
In The Canal
These are less visible than other types, resting deeper in the ear canal rather than sitting on an outside portion of the ear. However, the small size means they do not have the same power as larger models and may not be (most) suitable for severe hearing loss. That same small size makes them lightweight, comfortable, and discreet.
Completely In The Canal
These are the least visible, and boast some of the least background noise and feedback because they sit so deeply into the ear canal. They are custom designed to fit into each individual’s ear. However, the small size comes with reduced battery life and can be a challenge for some to operate and position because of the small size. They are also more prone to collecting moisture and ear wax. However, they have many benefits by sitting closer to the ear drum than many other models.
With so many features, fits, and styles, hearing aid maintenance is a little different for each model. Your hearing aid will come with instructions for how to care for that specific device, and Dr. Halsey-Richardson will walk you through what you need to do to get the most out of your new hearing aid. However, some aspects of hearing aid maintenance are standard across all models:
- Be sure to turn your hearing aid off when not in use, to preserve battery power.
- Clean your hearing aid at night using the tools and instructions provided, and keep the battery door open overnight, if applicable. These steps will release moisture, remove ear wax, and disinfect your device.
- Change the filters, if any, regularly according to the instructions.
- Avoid moisture or getting your hearing aid wet, as in the shower, swimming pool, ocean, or sauna.
- Change batteries regularly. Consider purchasing a battery tester to help you find the right battery usage schedule. You want to change batteries well before they run out so you’re never unexpectedly stuck without power, but if you change them too often you aren’t getting full use of your batteries and will waste money.
- If you have any questions, maintenance issues, need assistance with battery changes, or need further fittings, Dr. Halsey-Richardson can help you get the most out of your hearing device.
